The Official Nonsense Thread

RE: The Official Nonsense Thread
Yes it was all very lovely. I really like torcs and enjoy staring at them. There was one somewhat hilarious part of the exhibition, though, which included all the made-up Victorian stuff, when Celtic art had a bit of a fashionable revival, plus some batshit crazy druid items including a truly massive horn.

Sorry for inducing envy. I am very lucky to have these things on my doorstep. I try to see as much as I can, as I figure if I'm going to have to live and work in this hellhole I should at least spend as much time as possible in the interesting museums and theatres. It makes the negative aspects of city life more bearable.

Remember Caspin, it's not the size of the horn but what you do with it. Tongue

I went to a funeral yesterday for one of my great-uncles. It seems the older I get the more funerals I attend. More funerals than weddings and baby showers these days. Is it a sign of middle-age when that happens?

RE: The Official Nonsense Thread
There's a lot of the younger ones from my work who have attended far more funerals than I, often during their school days from mates dying from drugs, road accidents or topping themselves. I wonder sometimes if this is what makes them such mercenary little bar stewards?

I am content in middle age. I am in no hurry to get old, but I don't think I'd enjoy being young these days!

I don't enjoy weddings and baby showers aren't really a thing over here, or at least not among my friends, so I'm stuck with funerals. Condolences to your family for the great-uncle's.

Canada had its Federal election last night. The Liberals and Justin Trudeau swept the polls to win a majority government. BeatingHeartClapping I don't know what the UK version of the Liberal party would be - I look to Minty, Matt, Caspin, and the other Brits for help there.

Congratulations Canada! Haveadrink

Does anyone know anything about growing chilli pepper plants? The leaves on mine are very floppy and fall off easily. It's well watered but not overly. I'll be sad if it doesn't thrive - it adds a nice burst of colour in the kitchen, where all the other plants are green.

Good question. I think what's considered Liberal in North America is a whole lot different to Britain & Europe.

We have a party called the Liberal Democrats, which came from a merger between the Liberals & the Social Democrats, but some would argue they don't stand for anything really anymore except hoping to get into power as part of coalitions. The social side of liberalism was stolen by Labour (the Trade Unions balloons backed party) and the economic side by the Tories (the evil bosses backed party), squeezing them out.

Glad to see Trudeau Junior's first act as PM was to tell Obama all the Canadian forces are going back home & he can use someone else's sons & daughters for cannon fodder, especially with some morons in the Canadian military wanting their forces merged with the US ones. Like WTF? - who would you think would end up the first assault wave in EVERY conflict?

SOOOO not looking forward to returning to work tomorrow, especially as I've spent all weekend repairing the computer (again!).

P.S. It's being just reported on the BBC that EVERY seat in the Polish Diet (their Parliament) has been taken by right wingers, because the Poles don't want immigrants in their country.

Have these f**kers ANY sense of irony? Their ambassador to the UK admitted back in February that all that's been keeping them afloat the past five years has been Poles working in the UK but using the same sort of iffy tax scheme (paying Polish tax rates) much beloved by badly run Scottish football clubs & Boots the Chemist, earning the Polish treasury £4 billion a year.

Merkel, get them "telt" - OK Jaroslaw Kaczynski, you don't want to take in immigrants, get out of the EU & see how long you last without it. Canada may not vote for Rhinoceroses, but it seems Poland does vote for Pro-Christmas Turkeys!

RE: The Official Nonsense Thread
Hi Minty,

I knew you guys had Tories as well (they are not usually liked here in Canada either) as Liberals (names we borrowed from you guys).
Also, us Canucks make good cannon fodder. Since the days of the First World War, anyway.
The NDP are probably like the Social Democrats. I need to do more research on this, I think. Thanks for the clarification Minty. Much appreciated.

This sounds so much like the german social democrats party, the SPD.

Edit: Only now do I read that Minty's talking about Merkel as if she was legitimately ruling the EU O.o Kind of scary, isn't it, that she's seen as someone who has the power to kick Poland out of the EU while she's actually only leader of ONE European country?
