RE: The Official Nonsense Thread
That was a very enjoyable read. I will look for more of his work.
We didn't read much poetry at school. We were very lucky to have a great English teacher and she made sure that we got to do a sort of triple English at GCSE (English Lang, English Lit and Theatre). That teacher certainly instilled in me my love of theatre, but perhaps it's a shame that we mostly read plays or novels, not really many poems. Can't have it all. I do remember there was a poem on an exam that was written by a Northern Irish poet. It was extremely depressing and ended with a young soldier feeling obliged to throw himself over a bomb to take the force of the blast. Half the class sat sit through that exam crying their eyes out! The invigilator was also very sad. These days there'd be an outcry and everyone's grade would be artificially marked up for extenuating circumstances caused by being upset by the material. |
