Will "The Sims 3" Have SecuROM?
The majority of gamers won't even notice that a game uses SecuROM copy protection software. Those that have know that it can be more than just a nuisance, but cause serious problems with optical drives. Whether "The Sims 3" uses SecuROM is a factor for gamers who've experienced issues previously.
What is SecuROM?
What SecuROM is suppose to do is prevent people from pirating software. When in reality it might slow down the process - a little. "Spore" had SecuROM and was the most pirated game of 2008. The software is not stopping illegal copies from being shared.

Troubles with SecuROM
The problem gamers have with SecuROM are many. On the top of the list is legit CD/DVD copy software is being recognized as CD emulation and prevents running the game, added malware, and causing CD/DVD drives to completely stop working. SecuROM gives a small portion of the gaming community issues, while not stopping illegal copying and sharing of software.

Will SecuROM be in "The Sims 3?"
EA has not officially announced one way or another. The signs are there that SecuROM will be used. MC Chun told VideoGamer.com, "It's not going to be the crazy, manage-18-accounts or count-the-number-of-times-you've-installed thing. But it is going to have copy-protection." That doesn't tells whether or not SecuROM used. Publishers can customize SecuROM to their needs.

The EA Store gives us warning that SecuROM will be used. Add "The Sims 3" physical copy to your cart and this text is shown:

EA Store ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE REQUIRED FOR PLAY. TO ACCESS ONLINE SERVICES, YOU NEED AN INTERNET CONNECTION AND MUST REGISTER ONLINE WITH THE ENCLOSED SINGLE USE SERIAL CODE. REGISTRATION IS NOT TRANSFERABLE. EA ONLINE TERMS & CONDITIONS CAN BE FOUND AT http://www.ea.com. YOU MUST BE 13+ TO REGISTER ONLINE. EA MAY TERMINATE ONLINE SERVICES AFTER 30 DAYS NOTICE POSTED ON http://www.ea.com. THIS GAME USES SECUROM ANTI-PIRACY TECHNOLOGY BY SONY DADC. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SECUROM, VISIT http://www.securom.com.

I'd say that SecuROM will indeed be present. EA has to let us know their plan of DRM soon. June is just around the corner.

Visit for in-depth coverage on SecuROM.
