what do you mean by the main characters? if you mean the landgrabbs,goth,bachelors,and others then yes you should be able too  {blink}

at sunset valley, when you load the neighborhood Choose household should be on the bottom left and all the families should be available. if this doesn't show up try deleting your "Cache" from Electronic arts documents Or reinstall the sims
