Solved: CTD on startup
I've just reinstalled Sims 2 with all expansion packs up to Bon Voyage, but I'm getting a crash to desktop when I start the game.

I get a split second of black, then a split second of sims-blue followed immediately by the Windows "BONK" error sound and then I'm back to desktop. This all takes about 2 seconds.

I've tried all the "idiot" solutions already and been all over the internet so now I'm making my own topic and hoping someone can make something out of my logs.

Re: CTD on startup
Which solutions have you tried so far and what are your system specs? Have it worked before on your computer?

By giving this information, I should be able to do a better search and hopefully get the solution faster.

Re: CTD on startup
I've recently formatted C: and reinstalled XP. Previous OS was a swedish XP, I think it was Home. Current is XP Pro SP3 in English. The game worked before I formatted.

I've made sure to update drivers for graphics, audio and keyboard. I've tried restarting the computer and turning off all forced settings in the graphics driver. I've also tried reinstalling Sims with all expansions and making sure I deleted all files and folders left behind in My Docs and Program Files. I've tried starting several different expansions and they all crash in the same way. I've made sure all tests in dxdiag work fine.
EDIT: I've also patched every single expansion and the game to the latest v before installing the next expansion. I installed them in chronological order.
EDIT2: Uninstalled everything after trying to disable the minimizing thing mentioned below. Installed only Sims 2 core game, still crashes the same, only now I don't get the BONK sound and my Wallpaper temporarily disappears until i change it or do something else (logging in and out etc.) Also, split second of blue is gone, not it's just a split second of black and then CTD. I then patched it and nothing changed. It's also ceased to create crash logs in My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Logs

System specs:
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GTX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.61 GHz
2 GB RAM

I do have one very small hunch. I used an older graphics driver that I've already replaced to make Windows windows minimize and maximize instantly. Can't turn it off without reverting back to that, but the chances of that making the game crash are so small I'd rather wait and see what you think.

Thanks for caring/helping : D

Re: CTD on startup
Is the game a Swedish version or English version? There's sometimes a compatibility issue between the OS and the game if they are from different regions.

Re: CTD on startup
I lost my discs a long time ago, I think I actually lent them to my nephew, so the installer I'm using is a Japanese/English/Korean 4-cd version I got off the net. I've installed TS2 in English. (I don't even know any Japanese or Korean)

EDIT: I also had a revelation of sorts moments ago. It could be my motherboard that's messing things up. I'll take the long story.
Last time I played Sims 2 on this computer was actually some months ago, but the computers motherboard ceased to function and we sent it to HP to have it replaced. They replaced it with a newer model, one which I have no idea of the model or manufacturer, but after the format I decided not to play Sims for several months because they wiped my saves in the process. I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows as stated earlier and for some reason my urge to play Sims returned. Since this is the first time I've tried to start TS2 since the motherboard replacement, that's probably the culprit. But I have no idea what to do about it: Update drivers? BIOS? How do I find the right one?

Re: CTD on startup
Well, it sounds like that might be what caused it, but I have no idea on how to make it work. So then it most likely is your processor/motherboard (the two are connected), maybe even the graphics card (It could be so many things, depending on how everything is connected xD) that could be causing the problem. I would talk to HP support and see if you can get anywhere with them.

I know HP screwed my laptop up and I couldn't play TS2... but that's because my graphics card went to crap and Best Buy (whom the warrenty was under), didn't even know how to fix my fans, let alone my graphics card.

Re: CTD on startup
Yeah, something obviously isn't stable about that rig. Yesterday I was play Modern Warfare 2 and for some reason, suddenly night vision decided to start working, as well as the laser pointer. They never worked before without too many graphical glitches that you'd be able to see nothing.

Edit: It works now. I uninstalled all nvidia drivers and installed again the ones HP provide on their site.
