As far as laid off, I doubt it. I don't think economics will be that big a factor in TS3.

It's the word 'laid'. It means something else, right? Well, ANYWAY... that would be interesting, to be fired in different ways depending on what the employee did. Angry shouting and calm tellings would be nice. The angrier the firing is, the more unhappy the moodlet could be.

we can't see our sims at work so we won't know how they were fired
but there could be diffrent kind of fireing that could effects moodlets diffrently
