The Little Reata - Wilma Morrissey - 09-02-2009 08:40 PM

Our story beginnings with such a simple thing as love. It was a hot June night in long ago, George Loach was out dancing. He had worked hard to afford a fancy suit, as he looked out over the dance floor he felt proud. George grew up in a poor family and wearing a nice and clean suit was something new to him. Suddenly he saw her, across the floor stood the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Her blond hair was decorated with flowers and she looked so pretty. George had never been shy so he hurried over the floor and introduced himself.
- My name is George Loach, and what can a pretty girl like you be called, he smiled and hoped for a positive response. The pretty girl looked surprised but she answered.
- My name is Lillian Harper.
- Miss Harper would you care to dance.

Of course Lillian accepted, George was so handsome and charming. And just after a few months they got married.

George had some money and he bought a nice home for himself and his pregnant wife. The house was a bit isolated but it didn’t matter. All he wanted was his wife; he couldn’t take his eyes of her.  He called their home for The Little Reata and George was sure that they would be happy here.

A few months later Lillian gave birth, the family now had two children, one boy and one girl. They named the girl Mary and she did just as her mother did. They were so alike, serious with no sense of humour, a bit shy and very dutiful. The boy they named George after his father, but no one had ever called him George. He was always Bud. And Bud was funny enough very alike his father. They were both determined and stubborn, and of course very charming. The little family lived in Little Reata and had it quite hard. They lacked money and the little house was not very big and with two children running around (especially Bud) it seamed even smaller.

The years went by, and little Charles was born. He was not like neither his sister or brother. He was very shy; he didn’t have the charm and confidence of his brother and liked to be on his own. George was a bit worried at his youngest son; he was determined to straighten the young boy out. But George wasn’t home much, he worked in the Town Dean’s Ville and the travelling took a lot of time.

But he saved money so that the family could be photographed. On the special day Bud was forced into a suit, Mary’s hair was carefully brushed and Charlie forced to smile. The photo didn’t reflect the family situation.

Bud was running wild with the other boys and did any mischief he could come up with. But George wasn’t worried about him; George always said that boys are that way. But Lillian wasn’t so sure. Mary still helped her mother but she had started playing with the next-door neighbour’s daughter. They were best of friends.

And so suddenly one day came the war. George was forced to fight but he didn’t mind. He had looked forward to the day when he could defend his beloved country. Lillian wasn’t quite as happy, the family had real financial troubles and she was tired. But Lillian never ever complained.
George was away from home for several years, he sent lots of letters and said he kept the family photo in his breast pocket all the time. Lillian would then tell him of all Bud’s mischief and his falling grades, of Charlie’s good grades but lack of friends and of Mary’s (not always so nice) boyfriends.

But everything eventually ends. So George came home and soon Lillian was pregnant. Nine months later she gave birth to two more sons (what are the odds of having twins twice?) Thomas and John. The both boys were very normal; they were kind, social, happy and so on. Once again George decided that the family should take a family photo and so they did. George and Bud was a bit angry that they had to hold the toddlers but they didn’t dare complain. The photographer was a man they trusted and looked up to.

Bud dropped out of school and started to work and moved to Dean’s Ville. George was so proud of his oldest son, because George had always thought that action is more important than knowledge. For that reason he wasn’t all too happy about Charlie’s desire to study at university. He refused to pay so Bud did. Charlie figured it was as a way of saying “ I am sorry that I ruined your childhood with my stupid gang”. And it sure was, Bud had been mean to so many people during his youth and he now wanted to repay them in some way.

Mary had real bad luck with the boys, they often took advantage of her and she had some real problems with saying no! But she hoped that one day it would be better, she had decided to stay with Bud for a time, she was sick of the countryside and longed for the city.

Johnny and Tom never had problems with anything, they were never particularly good at something either but they made their way through life with ease.

Mary never had luck, she got pregnant and wasn’t married. She refused to tell anyone who the father was and moved back to live with her parents and the lovely relationship she had with Bud was forever gone. She named her baby girl Lucy and the little baby looked a lot like her grandma.

The family reunited for a photo session. Charlie had started working at the local hospital as a doctor and his mother was so proud. Mary stood in the back and hugged her little girl, she didn’t want to meet Bud, there was to many bad memories. Johnny held his hands in a self secure pose, his ego had grown much during the last years when he found out that most girls thought he was good looking. George stood in the back, he was proud of his family and knew that he could die happy. Lillian was sick and tired of her demanding husband but she was so happy that Mary and Lucy would live with her. She had missed the sound of small baby feet running over the hard wooden floor. Tom was a bit angry because his girlfriend wasn’t allowed to be in the photo. “’Only family”, his father said and Tom knew that arguing with his old man was pointless. And finally there was Bud, his company had grown quite big and he offered his sister money so she could live in the city. But she refused.

This is an original idea!

I love it and they way you tell the story.

I loved the war part...bringing past events into the story, making it more realistic, and the costuming is so awesome.

Great job!
