You don't have to be romantic. Sneak out is a friendship thing. It doesn't do anything for romance whatsoever.
Are you sure that there weren't any factors that would prevent the option from happening? Like, were they in a different household? If they weren't, and you don't know any other teens, the option wouldn't be avaliable.
