Does anyone still play The Sims 1?

Well, because the transition from Sims1 to Sims2 was sooooo drastic, it's not surprising how quickly it was forgotten. The transition also didn't require too much change as far as PC systems went.

However, with Sims3, the changes aren't nearly as drastic, and likely you'll need newer systems (or at least better specs) to run it. So, I don't think S2 will be phased out as fast as S1 was. If any of that makes sense, lol.
