There IS birds and guinea pigs in Sims 2, along with stores that come with the game that you can place in your towns. You can buy and customize dogs and cats there and buy collars.

I think there should be farm animals and if you have cows or chickens you can get eggs or milk and be able to sell them like you can sell food you have grown in your garden. There should be zoos and more options for your pets.
