Wait... I thought he was just stepping out of the way to let the sims3 team do this one project.
If so, I want to thank him anyway because of what he went through to make this game a reality. Its been known that he got the idea of the Sims from a house fire in his California home where he lost everything. He wanted to make a game that would last forever and never be completely destroyed (open ended gameplay) and if so (more fires) you could start over (like he did)

Not only did he create one of the best games possible, he opened the doors for female gamers like myself who were told games were for boys.

If he indeed are stepping down from the Sims, I'm still looking forward to his next creations.

If you guys were paying attention, you'd see that Maxis isn't at all involved with The Sims projects anymore. They're not credited on Free Time, and Will Wright was never even directly involved in The Sims 2; he only agreed to make it to finance Spore. Other Maxis projects have also been given to new production teams; SimCity Societies wasn't developed by Maxis either. The Sims 3 is completely Maxis free, minus a few people who have moved over to the new team.
